Glasses Cases and Cleaning Cloths

A blue light lens is a coated lens. That coating is what does the filtering, and it is the part that fails first.

Most people do not scratch their glasses by dropping them. They wear the coating away slowly, over months, by cleaning them wrong and carrying them loose. Both are easy to avoid, and neither costs much to fix.

We stock two things here: a hard glasses case and a microfiber cloth. That is deliberately it. You do not need a kit.

What Actually Scratches Your Lenses

Not the drop. The wipe.

Dust lands on a lens all day. When you pull your shirt up and rub a dry lens, you are dragging that grit across the coating. Do it once and nothing happens. Do it twice a day for a year and you have a haze of fine scratches you cannot polish out.

Three things people use that should never touch a lens:

  • Your shirt. Cotton and polyester weave is coarse compared to a lens coating, and it is never clean.
  • Paper towel or tissue. Both are wood fibre. It feels soft on skin and behaves like fine sandpaper on a coating.
  • Household glass cleaner. Most contain ammonia, which strips lens coatings. The bottle under your sink is the fastest way to ruin a filter.

The second cause is carrying glasses loose. A bag has keys in it. A coat pocket has a zip. A car door pocket has grit. Anything hard and moving will find the lens eventually. That is what a hard glasses case at $16.99 is for.

How to Clean Coated Lenses Properly

Four steps, thirty seconds, and it will not damage anything.

1. Rinse under lukewarm running water first. This is the step everyone skips and it is the important one. Water carries the dust off before anything touches the lens. Not hot water, which can lift a coating over time.

2. One small drop of plain dish soap. Rub it gently over both sides with your fingertips. Nothing fancy, nothing with a moisturiser or a scent additive in it.

3. Rinse again.

4. Dry with a clean microfiber cloth. Not a shirt, not a tea towel. Our microfiber cloth at $13.69 is made for coated lenses and is washable, so it lasts.

Wash the cloth every few weeks. A microfiber cloth that has been in a bag for six months is holding grit and doing the same damage as a shirt.

One note on disposable wipes. A lot of people search for glasses wipes and mean the individually wrapped alcohol pads. Those are fine occasionally, but alcohol is hard on some coatings with daily use, and you are buying the same thing over and over. We sell a reusable cloth instead. It is cheaper across a year and gentler on the filter.

Hard Case or Soft Pouch?

Both exist and they solve different problems, so here is the honest split.

A soft pouch stops the lens rubbing against things. It does nothing if the glasses get sat on or crushed. Fine if your glasses live on a desk and travel in a jacket pocket.

A hard shell case takes the weight. If your glasses go in a backpack, a handbag, a gym bag or a car, this is the one that matters. It is also the only thing that survives another person sitting on the bag.

We only make the hard version, because that is where the actual failures happen. Ours is a rigid clamshell with a soft lining, and it fits every frame we sell, including our wider frames and our oversized shapes.

If you keep one pair at a desk and one in a bag, the bag pair is the one that needs the case. There is more on that split on our women's and men's pages.

Two Habits That Bend Frames

Neither of these has anything to do with the lens, and both are why glasses stop sitting straight after a few months.

Taking them off with one hand. Pulling a frame off by one arm twists the whole thing every time. After a few hundred times, one lens sits lower than the other. Use two hands. It sounds fussy and it adds years to a frame.

Resting them lens down on a table. The two things you least want scratched are the two things touching the surface. Fold them and rest them on the arms, or put them in the case.

Metal frames with adjustable nose pads can be bent back into shape. Plastic frames usually cannot, so the habit matters more if you wear plastic.

Common Questions

Will the case fit glasses I did not buy from you?

Most likely, yes. It is a standard adult clamshell and it fits typical frame widths. It is sized for our range, so very large or wraparound frames from elsewhere may be tight.

Can I buy just a case, without glasses?

Yes, and shipping is still free. No minimum order, no threshold to hit. That is unusual on a $17 item and it is deliberate.

Is the microfiber cloth safe on blue light coatings?

Yes. Microfiber lifts dust rather than dragging it, which is exactly what a coated lens needs. Just keep it clean and wash it every few weeks.

How often should I wash my glasses?

Properly, with water and soap, once a day if you wear them all day at a desk. A quick dry buff with a clean cloth between times is fine. What you want to avoid is only ever dry wiping.

My lenses are already scratched. Can they be fixed?

No. Once a coating is scratched it cannot be polished out, and any product claiming to do so usually removes more coating. This is the real reason a case is worth $17: prevention is the only option available.

Do you sell lens spray or a cleaning kit?

No. Water and a drop of dish soap does the same job for nothing. We would rather sell you the two things that actually help.
