Do Blue Light Glasses Help You Sleep?
Short answer: blue light blocking glasses may help some people sleep longer and better, but only if the lenses are amber or orange and you wear them for 2 to 3 hours before bed. Clear blue light glasses are not a sleep aid. They filter only a small part of blue light.
Every pair we sell has clear lenses. So we’re telling you this even though it won't sell you a pair for sleep. Here is the quick version:
| Your goal | What works best |
|---|---|
| Better sleep after evening screen time | Amber or orange sleep glasses, plus dim lights |
| A free first step | Night mode on your devices and a screen break before bed |
| Comfort during long screen days | Clear blue light glasses, worn during the day |
| Ongoing trouble sleeping | Talk to your doctor |
How Light Affects Your Body Clock
Your body runs on a 24-hour internal clock called the circadian rhythm. Light is the main signal that sets it.
The back of your eye has special light-sensing cells. They are not used for seeing. Their job is to tell your brain whether it is day or night. These cells react most to blue light. In the evening, that signal holds back melatonin, the hormone that helps you feel sleepy.
Blue light has a stronger effect than other colours. In one Harvard experiment, blue light held back melatonin for about twice as long as green light of the same brightness (Harvard Health).
But blue is not the only problem. These cells also react to other colours. Bright light of any colour late at night can make sleep harder. That is why dimming your lights matters as much as filtering blue light.
Why Lens Colour Matters for Sleep
Blue light glasses come in two main types. They are built for very different jobs.
| Clear blue light lenses | Amber or orange sleep glasses | |
|---|---|---|
| How much blue light they filter | A small share | Most of it |
| How colours look | Almost normal | Strongly orange |
| When to wear them | During the day, at your screen | 2 to 3 hours before bed |
| Main purpose | Screen comfort, true colours | Supporting sleep |
| Help with sleep? | No reliable effect | May help some people |
McGill University's Office for Science and Society explains it well. Orange lenses block most blue light, so they should not be worn during the day. Clear lenses stay clear by letting most blue light through (McGill OSS).
What the Research Says About Sleep Glasses
- Amber lenses showed a benefit in a small trial. At Columbia University, 14 adults with insomnia wore wrap-around amber glasses for two hours before bed for a week. They got about 30 minutes more sleep than when they wore clear glasses. They also rated their sleep as longer, better and sounder. The researchers said larger studies are still needed (Columbia University Irving Medical Center).
- An earlier trial found similar results. People who wore amber glasses for three hours before sleep reported better sleep quality than a control group (Chronobiology International, 2009).
- The big review is mixed. A 2023 Cochrane review looked at six sleep trials, all using tinted lenses. Three found better sleep and three found no difference. The studies were small and often not blinded, so the evidence is very low certainty (Cochrane Review).
The pattern is simple. Every sleep study showing a benefit used tinted lenses worn in the evening. That is why, when choosing sleep glasses, lens colour matters most.
Who May Benefit Most From Sleep Glasses
- People with insomnia who use screens in the evening
- People who work late on a laptop and cannot cut back on screen time
- Night owls who want an easy habit to signal "wind-down time"
If you already sleep well, sleep glasses probably won't change much. Free habits may be all you need.
When to Wear Blue Light Glasses Before Bed
- Start 2 to 3 hours before bed. That is the timing used in the studies above.
- Wear them every evening. One night won't tell you much.
- Pick wrap-around frames. Light coming in from the sides reduces the effect.
- Don't wear them during the day. Daytime light helps keep your body clock on track.
Free Ways to Sleep Better After Screen Time
Try these before you spend money on anything, including sleep glasses:
- Turn on night mode on your phone, tablet and computer after sunset. We compare it with glasses in blue light glasses vs night mode.
- Dim all your lights in the evening, not just your screens. Use warm, low lamps instead of bright ceiling lights.
- Choose calm content at night. News and work email keep your mind alert, even with night mode on.
- Get daylight in the morning. Even a short walk outside helps. This matters in Canadian winters, when many cities are dark before 5 p.m.
- Keep a regular bedtime, including on weekends.
Where Clear Blue Light Glasses Fit In
Every frame we sell has a clear, non-magnified lens. We do not sell amber sleep glasses. Our glasses are made for a different problem: comfort during long screen days at work, school or gaming.
Here is what a clear pair does well:
- Your screen colours stay true, unlike night mode, which turns the whole screen orange.
- One pair works on every screen, from your work laptop to your phone.
- No prescription is needed. Learn more in non-prescription glasses in Canada.
- Every pair is under $50, with free shipping across Canada.
Many people use both: clear lenses during the day, and night mode with dim lights in the evening. Browse our computer glasses for desk days, or shop all blue light glasses. To find the right size, measure a pair you already own across the front and compare it with our frame width guide.
If tired eyes are your main problem, read our guide to digital eye strain relief first. Want to know what your current pair blocks? Try our at-home blue light glasses test.
When to See a Doctor
If you have trouble sleeping most nights for weeks, talk to your family doctor. Ongoing sleep problems can have causes that no pair of glasses will fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do blue light glasses help you sleep?
Amber or orange lenses worn 2 to 3 hours before bed may help some people sleep longer and better, especially people with insomnia. Clear blue light glasses filter too little blue light to reliably help sleep.
What are sleep glasses?
Sleep glasses are blue light blocking glasses with amber, orange or red lenses. You wear them in the evening to reduce the light that holds back melatonin.
Can I wear clear blue light glasses before bed?
Yes, and they won't hurt your sleep. But they won't help much either. Night mode, dim lights and a screen break before bed will do more.
Are amber glasses or orange glasses better for sleep?
Both block much more blue light than clear lenses. Darker orange lenses block more light overall. The most important thing is wearing them consistently in the evening.
Should I wear amber glasses during the day?
No. Daytime light helps you feel alert and keeps your body clock on track. Strong tints also change how colours look. Save amber lenses for the evening.
Are blue light glasses safe to wear?
Yes, for most people. The 2023 Cochrane review found side effects were rare and mild, such as headache or discomfort from the frame. Similar complaints showed up with regular lenses too. If you have a mood disorder, ask your doctor before using sleep glasses, since a few people in those studies reported lower mood.
Is night mode enough for better sleep?
For many people, night mode plus dim lights is a good start. It is free and already on your devices. Our night mode guide shows how to turn it on.
